Leaving Wellington, headed south!

Leg 2 of our trip

overcast 54 °F

Written Sunday evening, 2/27:

It's Sunday afternoon and we're sitting in the Wellington airport waiting to board our flight to Christchurch. We're disappointed that our original plan to take the puddle-jumper/coastal train down south didn't work out, but we're grateful that the restructuring that we had to do was so minor.

We really enjoyed our time in Wellington. What a great city! First, it's beautiful -- surrounded by water and hillside, with houses perched on ledges and amazing views as far as the eye can see. And it's got fantastic restaurants, bars, cafes and shopping! We spent much of the three days that we were there walking around, popping into shops, snapping pictures along the waterfront and sampling the local fare. It was great to have Jen with us, since she knew the area and could point us to her favorite hot spots.

Highlights of the Wellington leg included riding the cable car, walking through the botanic garden, spending an afternoon at the Te Papa museum, dinner and drinks at a bar called The Library and this morning's walk through Zealandia, a bird sanctuary. We were hoping to see a real kiwi bird, but since they're nocturnal, we had no such luck.

Written Monday morning, 2/28:

Right now we're sitting at Arthur Pass Cafe in the south island on our way to Franz Josef glacier. We spent last night in the camper van and it was quite interesting! We have Anna with us now, so all four of us squeezed in the van last night! We stopped to sleep beside a lake a few hours outside of Christchurch, where it was nice and quiet. But, it was also really windy and cold! I slept in the top "bunk," which is sort of under a tent and the walls were shaking! I don't know that any of us slept very well but it's fun :).

Spending a little bit of time in Christchurch was interesting, too. Even in the area outside the downtown part of the city, we could see damage and there was one building in particular that was just a pile of rubble. Scary.

Tomorrow is our glacier hike! Can't wait for that and also Milford Sound on Tuesday!
